Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2)

The staff in Key Stage 1 work together to ensure that they plan a curriculum that is appropriate for children in years 1 and 2. They aim to ensure that there are plenty of opportunities for engaging learning activities with a particular focus on creative activities that are accessible for all pupils.

Cycle 1 - 2022 - 2023 

Ourselves and Our School

During this topic, children will explore how the world is mapped and use atlases to find different locations. They will also learn some key terms such as North and South Pole and equator and learn about the 4 points of a compass. They will also explore the key human and physical features of the school and its grounds.

Our Wonderful World

Children will learn about the 7 continents and 5 oceans. They will be able to explain the difference between a continent and a country and the difference between an ocean and a sea. They will also explore why Antarctica is uninhabited.

Is there anybody out there?

In this unit, children will explore the key events of the moon landing and will explain why Neil Armstrong is a significant individual. They will also develop their understanding of conflict by discussing the USA’s and Russia’s competition to get to the moon first.

Florence Nightingale

In this unit, we will learn about why Florence Nightingale is a significant individual and explore how society’s view of nursing changed because of her. We will also identify why Mary Seacole is a significant individual.

Sensational Safari

In this unit, children will engage in a comparative study between London and Kenya. They will focus on location, human and physical features and gain an in-depth knowledge into each of these places.

The Seaside

In this unit, the children will learn to locate coastal areas on a map and describe their key human and physical features. They will also explore the reasons why people visit the seaside.

Cycle 2 - 2023 - 2023

All around me...the UK

In this geography unit, children will learn all about the United Kingdom and its 4 countries. They will also gain a thorough understanding of the human and physical features of each country in the UK.

The Great Fire of London

Children will learn about why the Great Fire of London was a significant event and will be able to explain why the fire started. They will begin to explore and explain the terms congested and flammable. In this unit, the children will develop their understanding of the knowledge category ‘artefacts’ by explaining how Samuel Pepys’ diary can be used to learn about the fire.

The Polar Regions

This history unit will allow children to learn about the significant individuals Robert Falcon Scott and Roald Amundsen. They will find out why Scott didn’t reach the South Pole first and learn about how we know about Scott’s final journey.

The Rainforest- Down in the Jungle

Children will begin to develop their understanding of the difference between climate and weather. They will explore some physical features of climates and describe the diversity of the Amazon Rainforest.

Toys though time

In this unit, children will compare modern day toys with toys from other periods of time. They will use clues such as the materials used to identify when toys were made.

Rosa Parks- Significant Individuals

During this unit, children will learn to define segregation and explain happened to Rosa Parks on the day of her protest and discuss her legacy.
