Teaching about equality and diversity

The protected characteristics

Alongside teaching British Values and our own Starfish Values, we help children develop an understanding of the diverse world in which they live. Through our curriculum, assemblies and wider personal development programme, children learn the importance of treating everyone with respect, kindness and fairness.

A key part of this learning is understanding the protected characteristics set out in the Equality Act 2010. These characteristics are protected by law, meaning that it is unlawful to discriminate against someone because of them.

The nine protected characteristics are:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

By learning about protected characteristics in an age-appropriate way, children develop respect for differences, challenge stereotypes and learn how to contribute positively to a diverse and inclusive society.

It is important that children revisit these concepts throughout their time at Dallimore. We provide regular opportunities across the curriculum and through our wider personal development programme for children to develop their understanding, celebrate diversity, challenge stereotypes and learn how to be respectful and responsible members of society.
